DHARAMSHALA: Health Kalon Dr. Tsering Wangchuk launched an awareness campaign on Tibetan Medicare System in Dharamsala yesterday. It was attended by the local settlement officer, representatives of various Tibetan organisations and members of the public.
Addressing the public, the health Kalon gave a brief introduction about the Department of Health and its various health care programmes to improve the overall health of the Tibetan community. “Health department is one of the three departments including Home and education department, that is directly related to the public. We provide curative and preventative health care services by managing and financing health care centres, as well as by planning comprehensive health care system for the Tibetan refugees,” he said.
“The health department tries to improve public health through schemes covering both traditional Tibetan medicines and mainstream modern medicine. We also provide health incentives and benefits to old people, former Tibetan political prisoners and poverty stricken families.”
“Some of the major programmes include mother & child health programme, disease control programme particularly TB. For Tibetans residing in Dharamshala and nearby areas, these programmes are being conducted by Delek hospital which is an autonomous hospital under the health department,” he said.
Speaking on the Tibetan Medicare System (TMS), he said the TMS is a holistic and tertiary health care programme meant for all Tibetan refugees. It is an integrated medical insurance scheme provided by the Department of Health to provide financial security to the Tibetan public when faced with serious health problems.
It is a non-profit and charitable programme that aims to improve public health and well-being of the Tibetan community. All Tibetan refugees residing in India under the direct care of Tibetan Voluntary Health Association are eligible for the TMS. (Click here for more information on TMS)
