Fear of arrest and torture causes Tibetan monk to Commit suicide in Tibet Tuesday, 21 April 2009, 5:48 p.m.

Fearing arrest by the Chinese Public Security Bureau (PSB) officials, a
Tibetan monk identified as Shedup, aged around 40, committed suicide at
a monastery in Rebgong (Ch:Tongren) in Malho Tibet Autonomous
Prefecture (incorporated into China’s Qinghai Province), around 2 April. The name of the monastery where he committed suicide is still unknown, but it is believed to be Tarjang monastery located in Dowadhog. The other monastery in the area is known as Pengya.Shedup
was earlier arrested for his alleged role in a protest in Rebgong in
March last year and he was severely beaten and tortured in custody. He
was then released but his name appeared on the wanted list to be
arrested sometime before this year’s Tibetan national uprising day in
March. Finally, he killed himself to escape arrest and torture by PSB
officials.He had visited India to pursue studies as a part of
his post-retirement spiritual quest at Lubum Khangtsen, Gaden Jangtse
Monastery.
