Exile Parliament Appreciates US Commission, Sets Ravanaa on Fire
Dharamsala, 6 October 2003: US Congressional Executive Commission on China had earlier condemned the gross violation of human rights in Tibet by China. It had expressed serious concern and dissatisfaction against China on human rights record in Tibet.
The assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies on October 4 sent a letter to the Chairman of the US Congressional Executive Commission on China appreciating the commission’s support for Tibet’s cause.
Mrs. Gyari Dolma said that such outright criticism of China’s violation of human rights in Tibet will go a long way in boosting morale of the downtrodden people of the world including Tibetans within and outside Tibet and wherever the very concept of human rights is threatened.
The parliament of the exile Tibetan administration based in Dharamsala also urged the US government to give due importance to the 13-point recommendation of the Congressional Commission on China.
Meanwhile, the friendship between the local Indians and Tibetans received a boost yesterday with the Vice-Chairperson of the Tibetan parliament taking part in the festival of Dushehra (a Hindu festival where the ten-headed Ravana’s effigy is burnt to symbolise the killing of Ravana by lord Rama in the Ramayana epic) yesterday at the Ram Leela ground at Kotwali Bazar, Lower Dharamsala. She was invited by the Ram Leela Committee of Dharamsala as the Chief Guest for the occasion which was attended by the local people in hundreds. Remarkably, she also was offered the privilege to set afire the effigy of Ravana to mark the triumph of truth over evil.
