TAIPEI: A
month-long exhibition on Tibet, being jointly organised by the
Chinese-Tibetan Association of Taiwan and Tibet Religious Foundation of
His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Taipei, has begun at National Chiao Tung
University of Taiwan on 3 January.
A total of 72 panels are put on display,
which portray the life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetans in
exile, Tibetan Buddhism, history and arts of Tibet, and the past and
present situation inside Tibet. The exhibit also showcases Tibetan paper
money, coins and Tibet’s postage stamps.
The ongoing exhibition at National Chiao Tung University is the sixth
among the series of similar events held in five different cities in
Taiwan since July 2009. The last exhibition was held in Kaoshuing Museum
of Art from 2 September 2010, which was initially scheduled to run for
two months. But owing to large number of visitors, especially during the
weekend, the duration of exhibition extended by one month at the
request of museum authorities and it was concluded on 28 December.
“Our main objective of holding the exhibition is to create awareness
among Taiwanese people about issues related to Tibet and Tibetan people.
We are also looking for every opportunity to hold this mobile
exhibition in different schools and universities in Taiwan in order to
increase awareness among the young people,” the office of Tibet said in a
statement.
“This is the second University in Taiwan that we are holding the
exhibition and earlier we held the same exhibition for one month at
National Chang-kong University in Tainan. We expect many students from
this university will deepen their knowledge and learn more about the
history of Tibet and its ongoing situation, particularly inside Tibet,”
the statement noted.Another special event being held at the
university is a two-month
exhibition of about 200 books written or translated in Chinese about His
Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibet. National
Chiao Tung University of Taiwan
was founded in the suburbs of Shanghai in 1896 and later in 1958 the
same university was reestablished at its present location in Hsinchu,
Taiwan.
