European Union Reiterates Support to Tibet
Dharamsala, 22 June: The European Commission has once again expressed its support to the ongoing efforts for dialogue between Beijing and Dharamsala..
The European Commission shares European citizens’ concern regarding the situation of human rights in Tibet, in particular the preservation of its cultural, religious and linguistic identity, a statement said.
The European Union has called for the establishment of a direct dialogue between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Chinese leadership as the only solution to Tibet issue.
The EU welcomed the two visits to China of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s special envoys in 2002 and 2003. The statement also added that EU will continue pressing for the strengthening and deepening of this dialogue process.
The European Union has conducted a dialogue on human rights with China and has regularly addressed and will continue to address the issue of Tibet in this framework, as well as at the highest political level, such as bilateral Summits, the statement further said..
In the context of this dialogue the EU, which has put freedom of speech, association and religion very high on its agenda, has regularly brought to the attention of the Chinese authorities the cases of persons like Trulku Tenzin Delek who have been sentenced for having expressed their opinion or their belief.
