DHARAMSHALA: The Education Secretary of the Central Tibetan Administration attended an international workshop on education and visited a Tibetan language school during his recent visit to the US.
Education Secretary Ngodup Tsering paid a visit to the Tibetan Language School in New York run by New York and New Jersey Tibetan Association on 3 August. He inspected the classes, interacted with students and parents separately and held a meeting with the staff members.
The secretary spoke about how important and urgent it is for the Tibetan people to preserve Tibetan language and culture. Among other things, he suggested that it might be helpful to visit Jewish Private Schools in New York. Prior to this, he visited Minnesota and attended Tibetan Cultural School’s annual prize distribution function and also interacted with teachers and students.
Secretary Ngodup Tsering was in Amherst College to attend a workshop on ‘A Call to Care’ organised by Mind & life Institute (M&L) held from 20 – 25 July. He was accompanied by Tsering Samdup, Education Officer and head of Education Council, Tenzin Pelmo, English resource person at TCV and Tenzin Wangmo, teacher at Peteon School.
The workshop was global in nature and was attended by team of educators from Israel, Bhutan, Mexico, Chile, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, India and few states in the US. Inspired by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the experts of M&L have developed a draft curriculum in cultivating care and compassion, through three modes of care, viz Receiving care, Developing care and Extending care. The curriculum will be introduced in the respective countries/schools with adaptations as felt necessary.
“It is practical implementation of developing ‘Secular Ethics’ that His Holiness has always advocated, which aims to making a better human being without affiliating to the teachings and principles of any religious denomination” says Secretary Ngodup Tsering.
Accompanied by Kaydor Aukatsang, Representative at the Office of Tibet, Secretary Ngodup Tsering met with concerned officials of the US government funding agencies in Washington DC.
