Shillong: The Minister for Education of Central Tibetan Administration, Dr. Pema Yangchen was on an official visit to Shillong Tibetan settlement on 18th and 19th April 2019. Sherig Kalon was received by the settlement officer, Pema Dhondup, and the local dignitaries. Kalon was accompanied by Mr. Tenzin Kelsang, education officer for science (DoE).
Kalon started the official program on the next day 19th April, with the visit to the Buddhist monastery where the abbot and the monks welcomed Kalon. Following which, Kalon was escorted to the community hall for public discussion. During the public meeting, Kalon stressed on the importance of holistic education which has the potential to benefit not just oneself but the entire society which can eventually contribute to the cause. She further delved on responsibility and relationship between the parents and the teachers based on mutual respect, trust and moral ethics to up bring a child’s holistic development. At the end of the talk, Kalon listened to the public opinions and attended to the queries as well.
Following the community discussion, Kalon visited the Sambhota Tibetan School where the headmaster, teachers and staffs, students accorded a traditional welcome with the school band. Kalon witnessed the morning school activities followed by traditional song and dance performance by the students. Dr Pema Yangchen inspected each class and had close interaction with the students. Furthermore, the teachers and staff had a separate meeting with the Kalon where she highlighted the essence of basic education policy and gave valuable and practical advice.
later that day, kalon departed to Tenzingang Tibetan settlement for the final leg of the official tour in Arunachal Pradesh.
