Dharamshala: The Department of Education of the Central Tibetan Administration will felicitate ten Tibetan students with the prestigious Gaden Phodrang award this year. The award will be presented during the official ceremony to celebrate Tibetan Democracy Day on 2 September.
The Gaden Phodrang award is presented to the top three students of class 12 from the three streams of Science, Arts, and Commerce. The award was established in 2002 on the occasion of the 360th founding anniversary of the Gaden Phodrang Government of Tibet to celebrate the achievements of Tibetan students in Arts, Science, and Commerce. This year it will be the 20th year since the award was begun.
The aim of the Gaden Phodrang award was to highlight the immense contribution of the Gaden Phodrang government led by the successive Dalai Lamas of Tibet. It is also aimed to inspire and felicitate the achievements of Tibetan students and advance Tibetan education.
During the 14th Kashag, the cash prize of the award was further increased from 5000 Rs to 20,000 Rs for the first-place holder, and 15000 Rs and 10,000 Rs respectively for the second and third-place holder.
This year’s Gaden Phodrang award winners from Arts stream are Dekyi Yangzom, Tenzin Paldon, and Tenzin Choenzin. From Science, the winners are Tenzin Konchok Desel, Tenzin Lacksang, Tenzin Choezin, and Tenzin Paldon. From Commerce, it is Tenzin Gyaltsen, Tenzin Tsekyi, and Tenzin Dorje.
