Dharamsala: An agreement on exchange programme was signed in March this year between the Simon Fraser University, Canada and the Department of Education of
the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA). A batch of 16 student
teachers from the Faculty of Education, SFU, accompanied by two faculty
associates visited Dharamsala last month to undergo six-week semester
programme.The visiting student teachers and Tibetan school
teachers in Dharamsala participated in teaching observation and
practice at Sambhota Tibetan Schools Society at Chauntra, Mevon Tsuglag
Peton School and Sherab Gatsel School.Two short training cum
seminars on teaching methodologies were held for the visiting student
teachers and participating school teachers at the College of Higher
Tibetan Studies at Sarah near here. The Canadian faculty
associates, Ms. Mati and Mr. James O’Rourke, led the training. The
directors of the Library of Tibetan Works & Archives and Sambhota
Tibetan Schools Society were also invited as resource persons during
the short trainings at Sarah.During the above exchange
programme, the Canadian student teachers visited CTA offices, Tibetan
Institute of Performing Arts, Library of Tibetan Works & Archives,
Tibetan Medical & Astro Institute and Norbulingka Institute.At
the end of the programme, the Department of Education hosted a dinner
to the visiting guests from SFU. Mr. Ngodup Dorjee, Additional
Secretary of DOE, spoke on the occasion.SFU’s Faculty Members Visit Education Department Programme
Coordinator James O’Rourke and faculty associate Mati, from the Faculty
of Education, Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada,
visited the Department of Education (DOE), CTA on 3 November 2009 and
held a meeting attended by Additional Secretary Ngodup Dorjee,
Additional Secretary Tashi N. Rikha, Joint Secretary Tashi Dhondup,
Education Officers Tsering Phuntsok and Tsering Samdup.

The
officials exchanged experiences on the teacher training programme,
courses of studies and system of certification prevalent in Canada and
India, especially in the Tibetan community in exile among others.The
visiting faculty members and DOE officials also discussed other matters
relating to strengthening the SFU teacher training cum exchange
programme in Dharamsala in collaboration with the Department of
