DIIR Environmental Researcher Speaks to Miami University Students [Monday, 6 September 2010, 6:18 p.m.]

The executive head of the Environment and Development Desk of the
Department of Information and International Relations today delivered a
talk on Tibet’s environment to a group of 12 students and faculty of
Miami University in Dharamsala.The group is on a exchange programme at the College of Higher Tibetan Studies at Sarah.Mr
Tenzin Norbu spoke on the problems faced by Tibetan nomads as they are
removed from grasslands to towns and villages under the Chinese
government’s relocation programme and fencing of grasslands.He documented occurrences of unprecedented destruction caused by loss of soil fertility, drought and floods in Tibet.The
construction of large number of dams on Tibetan rivers by the Chinese
government and the resultant water woes faced by the neighbouring Asian
countries was highlighted.Mr Norbu also spoke on how
construction of a large number of factories for mining resources is
affecting the soil, water, and living beings. He took up the issue of massive Chinese population transfer to Tibet and how this is causing great harm to Tibet’s environment.
