Dharamshala: Provision of vocational/skill education to the students studying in Tibetan schools is felt necessary and is the need of the hour as well, taking into account the changing face of today’s world and its challenges. Academic qualifications alone can’t guarantee a career for all, therefore, the need for vocational/skill education is also very important for the younger generation in order to sustain in this ever-changing world.
CBSE has recently in 2017-18 introduced 17 skill courses at secondary school level (Class IX/X) and 42 at senior secondary school level (Class XI/XII) for all the affiliated schools. From the academic year 2017-18 CBSE has mandated vocational/skill education as part of class X & XII examination assessment.
The objectives of introducing the skill subjects:
i) In order to upgrade the skill and proficiency of the younger generation and also to provide them with awareness to explore various career options.
ii) The skill education envisions imparting the procedural knowledge and skills to the students that will enable students to excel and emerge successful in real situations both work and life.
iii) It works towards imparting an education that is holistic, meaningful and skill-oriented which instills among the youth a sense of usefulness and responsibility.
iv) The courses can orient the students to explore new avenues and acquire the pre-professional skills to face the challenges of life in the future.
The Department of Education – Organizational Development Assessment(ODA) report prepared by Intellecap (2018) also recommended the Education department to not only adopt the implementation of the CBSE vocational (Skill) education because of the government mandate but also for the reason that participation in vocational skill programmes at school level results in improved educational outcomes.
“Lend-a-Hand-India” (LAHI) a leading not-for-profit organisation in India, has led to this landmark mandate of the introduction of vocational (skill) education across 23 states/UTs covering 8500+schools and 800,000+students and is working closely with CBSE/MHRD to mandate vocational (skill) education in schools.
Taking into consideration of CBSE initiative as an opportunity, the Department of Education, CTA plans to incorporate feasible skill courses in Tibetan schools at secondary and senior secondary levels.
Accordingly, the DoE collected data from the schools through respective head offices whether the schools have opted/registered for CBSE skill courses or not, in order to design a strategic policy on the project implementation in the schools. Also, the DoE will conduct required assessments with the help of experts as consultants for this purpose.
Initially, the DoE would be encouraging the schools to implement Multi-Skill Foundation Course as a skill subject at secondary levels and one or two senior secondary schools for the advanced skill courses. The DoE in partnership with Lend-a-Hand-India is working on planning and implementing vocational/skill education. A consultation meeting with Mr Raj Gilda of LAHI on 2 January 2020 and a follow up meeting at DoE on 4 January 2020 was held in the same regard.
