Dharamshala: The Central Tibetan Administration led by Sikyong Penpa Tsering held an official ceremony today to celebrate the 152nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi (Gandhi Jayanti) at the Kashag Secretariat in Gangchen Kyishong. Along with Sikyong Penpa Tsering, the ceremony was attended by Secretaries and senior officials of the various departments of the Tibetan administration.
The ceremony began with Sikyong lighting a butter lamp and paying homage to a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi followed by addressing the media.
In his interaction with the media, Sikyong Penpa Tsering said that Mahatma Gandhi is the epitome of non-violence and that Gandhi has set an example across the world in resolving conflicts through nonviolence. “Gandhi’s model of non-violence is followed by Nelson Mandela in South Africa during his struggle against apartheid as well as by Martin Luther King during the civil rights movement in the United States. There are also numerous examples of such cases like the Czech Republic. In the case of the current Tibetan struggle, the strength of the movement is based on the principle of non-violence led by His Holiness the Dalai Lama who regards Mahatma Gandhi as one of his role models,” Sikyong said.
Sikyong urged everyone in the world to adopt non-violence in resolving differences since violence only begets violence. He also pledged on the occasion to follow non-violence as the only means to resolve any kind of conflict in the future.
