The Central Tibetan Administration on Friday expressed its deep
condolence over the death of Mr Gyatso Tsering, who remained the
longest serving director of the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives
in Dharamsala since its inception in 1971.Mr Gyatso Tsering, aged 73, breathed his last in Minnesota, US, on 25 June.As
a mark of respect, the officials of the Central Tibetan Administration,
including members of the Kashag, took part in an hour prayer session
yesterday at 3 pm, following which the departments and offices remained
closed.“Mr Gyatso Tsering dedicated his life in the service of
Central Tibetan Administration when the Tibetan issue was passing
through a most critical period,” Kalon Tsering Phuntsok said in his
condolence message.Before joining the services of the Central
Tibetan Administration in 1963, Mr. Gyatso Tsering worked in the
Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs of the
Government of India. At one time, he also served in the Government of
Sikkim.During his service in the CTA, he worked as office
secretary in the finance department in 1965. In the same year His
Holiness the Dalai Lama assigned him as English translator of the
repository of Tibetan Buddhist scriptures and artifacts at Tibet House
in Delhi.In 1968, he was appointed as office secretary in the
Council for Religious Affairs and later promoted to the post of
secretary and aide to Kalon. He assisted His Holiness the Dalai Lama as
his English translator during visits to Japan and Taiwan.He was
appointed as acting director of the Library of Tibetan Works and
Archives (LTWA) a year after its inception in 1971. He served as
director of LTWA from 1 March 1972 – 11 April 1998.
