
JODHPUR: A program titled ‘A Day for Tibet’ was organised by the Indo-Tibet Friendship Society and Indo-Tibet Mahila Manch, at the Mahatma Gandhi Mahavidyalaya School at Jodhpur city on 14 January. The event was held with the kind permission of Principal, Dr.Ajay Trivedi and his associates including Ms. Pushpa Sen, Vice Principal.
Mr. Jigmey Tsultrim, Coordinator, India-Tibet Coordination Office (ITCO), based in New Delhi attended the program, and spoke about the current situation of Tibetans inside Tibet. He expressed the Central Tibetan Administration’s deep concern over the wave of self-immolation protests taking place inside Tibet since 2009.
He also mentioned that Tibetans inside Tibet are facing political oppression, environmental destruction, economic marginalization, social injustices and cultural assimilation due to which they are forced to undertake such drastic steps of self-immolation.
Prof. M. A. Vadera from Jai Narayan Vyas University, Chief Guest at the occasion, spoke on the need for India’s solidarity with the sufferings of Tibetan people. He also mentioned that geographically, culturally and even historically, Tibet shared a closer relationship with India than China. He stated that youths in India should play an important role in disseminating information about Tibet.
Around 300 students, faculty members and dozens of media representatives joined the event. Tibetan Sweater Seller Association at Jodhpur also took part in this event by extending their assistance.
