Dharamsala, 1 October 2003: In what turned out to be a rare and quaint development, the organisers of the Shambhala Miss Tibet Pageant declared Tsering Kyi as Miss Tibet, 2003.
Tsering Kyi, a young girl from Labrang in Amdo, faces no competition after her nine opponents withdrew from the contest.
At a press briefing here at Bhagsu Hotel, the pageant organiser and producer Lobsang Wangyal said that Kyi has been declared unopposed as this year’s Miss Tibet.
Tsering Kyi has a book of Tibetan poetry to her credit and two more books are waiting to be published. Born in 1983, she fled her native village in Tibet to seek modern education.
“Kyi does not only fulfil the basic criteria to compete but also has achieved academic heights, we believe she is confident, dedicated and a strong Tibetan woman with a vision to work for the Tibet cause”, pageant producer Lobsang Wangyal told reporters.
At 5 feet 9 inches, Kyi possesses the face, the personality and the charm to be deserving of the crown, says Wangyal as he helps Kyi make her hair before posing for the camera.
Expressing her disappointment through an interpreter, Kyi told reporters that she is unhappy for the fact that there is a very poor participation in pageants like this in the Tibetan community.
Kyi also said that she will use her title to promote Tibetan culture and Tibet’s political situation all over the world.
The crowning will take place on the 9th of this month at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts during the first ever music awards function organised by the same production house.
The 20 year-old beauty queen said that the exile Tibetan community has a strong sense of regionalism which, according to her, is a rare phenomenon back in Tibet.
” I am against the regional differences prevalent in the Diaspora community”, she added.
A cash reward of Rupees one lakh will be presented to her during her crowning ceremony. She will also represent Tibet in the Miss Tourism Intercontinental, 2004.
Earlier, Dolma Tsering, the first holder of ‘Miss Tibet’ title won ‘Miss Good Will’ in the Miss Tourism Intercontinental, 2003, held in Kuching, Malaysia, where she also posed for the media with Miss China Dong Mei Xi.
