Dharamshala: The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and Tibetans in Dharamshala celebrated the 91st birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the courtyard of Tsuglagkhang in Dharamshala, where hundreds of Tibetans and supporters gathered to honour the occasion.
The celebration was attended by the Deputy Commissioner of Kangra District, Shri Hemraj Bairwa (IAS), as the chief guest, alongside the leadership of the Central Tibetan Administration, including Kalons (Minister), Tibetan Parliamentarians, heads of the CTA’s autonomous bodies, representatives of Tibetan non-governmental organisations, and members of the public.
Foreign dignitaries and guests also joined in the celebration along with local Indian community members and tourists in the area.
The programme began with the rendition of the Tibetan and Indian national anthems, followed by the ceremonial cutting of a birthday cake to mark the auspicious occasion.
In his address, the Deputy Commissioner extended warm birthday greetings to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on behalf of the state government and paid tribute to his lifelong dedication to promoting peace, compassion, non-violence, and universal human values. He also congratulated the Central Tibetan Administration for organising a series of programmes throughout the year under the theme, “Year of Compassion.”
He further acknowledged His Holiness’ invaluable contributions to the world through his Four Principal Commitments. “His Holiness is not just a global spiritual leader; he is a living symbol of peace, compassion, and universal responsibility in a world too often fractured by conflict and division. At a time when humanity faces growing divisions despite rapid technological advancement, His Holiness’ life serves as an extraordinary blueprint for harmony. He has consistently shown us that the ultimate source of happiness lies not in material wealth or power, but in cultivating a warm heart, practising forgiveness, and fostering human affection.”
The Deputy Commissioner added that, as a public servant, he found His Holiness’ message and guidance especially relevant and inspiring in serving the general public.
The chief guest also reaffirmed the district administration’s commitment to addressing the needs of the Tibetan community in the region. He expressed the appreciation of the people of Kangra for the Tibetan community’s significant contribution to promoting tourism in Dharamshala and supporting the local economy.
Following this, Deputy Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile delivered the Parliament’s statement, while the Officiating Sikyong, Tsegyal Chukya Dranyi, Kalon of the Department of Religion and Culture, read the Kashag’s statement before the gathering.
The official celebration also featured vibrant cultural performances by Tibetan schools, artistes from Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, and groups from Tibetan institutions and organisations, reflecting Tibet’s rich heritage and traditions. The performances added a festive spirit to the occasion while showcasing the community’s enduring commitment to preserving its cultural identity in the face of rising challenges to its existence.
As part of the programme, several CTA civil servants were recognised for their dedicated service and outstanding contributions in their respective departments.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the Vice Chair of the Central Ghoton Organising Committee, Secretary Thupten Tsering. Similar celebrations were held by Tibetan communities and supporters around the world to commemorate the 91st birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
