Tibetans and Taiwanese Supporters Mark Tibetan National Uprising Day [Wednesday, 16 March 2011, 2:42 p.m.]
Different events were organised by Tibetans and Tibet Support Groups in Taipei to mark the solemn day TAIPEI:
Hundreds of Tibetans and supporters joined with local Tibetan and Tibet
support groups and organisations to commemorate the 52nd Tibetan
National Uprising Day against the oppression of the People’s Republic
of China on 10 March. The event was held at 228 Peace Memorial Park, a historic site located in Taipei city. Mr
Dawa Tsering, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Taiwan,
read out the Chinese translation of His Holiness’ statement on the
occasion. The other guest speakers include Ms Tien Chiu-Chin,
Legislator, Ms Chien, Yu-Yen, Councilor of Taipei City and Ms Bi-khim
Hsiao, a former legislator. The organisers also held a peace rally in Taipei City on 12 March.On
13 March, the Office of Tibet and the Chinese Tibetan Association of
Taiwan co-organised a debate titled “Changes in the Middle East: Impact
on democratisation in China and China-Tibet relations” at the community
hall of Taiwan university students association. Mrs Tien
Chiu-Chin, Legislator, Mr Wang Dan, a well-known activist of democratic
movement in China, Mr Chien Ta, former legislator and many other
writers and professors spoke on the subject. All the participants have
expressed their full support to the Middle Way Approach proposed by the
Tibetan side towards resolving the issue of Tibet. On 14
March, Tibetans and Taiwanese held a special prayer service and
candle-light vigil for the victims of the devastating earthquake and
tsunami in Japan. About 40 Tibetan monks from different Tibetan Dharma
centers in Taipei attended the two-hour prayer service at Liberty
Square near Chiang Kai Shek memorial hall. A dozen of Japanese
citizens residing in Taipei city also attended the prayer and there
were also few Japanese news reporters who interviewed the organisers.
