His Holiness the Dalai Lama has called on the younger generation of Tibetans to study hard to become competent in both the traditional Tibetan and modern education, emphasising that the “knowledge of traditional education is key to learn the wisdom of human values”.“In addition to the development of mental faculty, learning the wisdom of morality is equally very essential. The source of the moral values lies in learning the traditional Tibetan education, including the most profound and pristine teachings of Buddha’s teachings available only in Tibetan language,” His Holiness the Dalai Lama told a gathering of around 500 Tibetan students studying in colleges and university in Delhi on 26 December. His Holiness underlined that Tibetan youths should become like two-winged birds, which he said signifies having a blend of both modern and traditional education. However, he said, modern education alone is not sufficient to inculcate ethical values and cannot guarantee inner happiness. “Many young people in today’s world are engaging in different sorts of illegal activities such as killing. Despite having modern education and best facilities, people in the government, including top officials are involved in corruption. These immoral activities occurred due to lack of moral values such as self-discipline. He further said that modern education alone cannot guarantee a happy life. “Therefore, it is very important to understand the value of warmheartedness through Buddha’s teachings on the karmic law of cause and effect.”“So whether one believes in Buddha’s teachings or not, it is very important to study them and to get new ideas and concepts. At the academic level, study of Buddhist philosophy is also very essential. It would help us to become open-minded and to think broadly, which in turn empowers us to sustain peace of mind in facing problems,” His Holiness added. His Holiness expressed concern over the cases of students who spoil their careers by wasting their precious time in loitering around. “Some of the students who join colleges and universities after completing school education often become negligent in their studies and squander their valuable time in wandering aimlessly. You all should be very careful and do not waste the precious time of study,” he said. His Holiness was in Delhi after successfully concluding a visit to India’s northeastern states of West Bengal and Sikkim from 15 – 24 December. His Holiness returned to Dharamsala this morning and was accorded warm welcome by hundreds of Tibetans and well-wishers in and around the town. The speaker of the Tibetan Parliament and Kalon Tripa received His Holiness at the airport, while other senior officials including justice commissioners and members of the Kashag welcomed him at his residence.
