Chinese surprise
The turn of events on Monday night took the top brass by surprise. South Block was, in fact, gearing up for a more protracted conversation on getting Chinese troops to move back from Finger 4 in Pangong Tso. It was felt that Chinese PLA would be more belligerent there as it had moved into advantageous ground.
What has happened so far since Monday
- Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat coordinating war reserves.
- Navy given go-ahead to deploy its assets near the Malacca Strait
- Air Force assets, including fighters, moved up to forward locations.
Genesis of a standoff
The Galwan standoff had begun after Chinese deployment threatened to cut off a strategic Indian road built to link the Daulat Beg Oldie base and the Karakoram Pass with Leh.
Did Chinese lose men too?
The only admission of casualties on the Chinese side came from the editor of their government mouthpiece Global Times. “Based on what I know, Chinese side also suffered casualties in the Galwan Valley physical clash. I want to tell the Indian side, don’t be arrogant and misread China’s restraint as being weak. China doesn’t want to have a clash with India, but we don’t fear it,” tweeted Hu Xijin, Editor-in-Chief of Global Times.
Beijing blames India
Beijing accused India of crossing the border, “attacking Chinese personnel”. China’s Foreign Ministry was quoted by Reuters as saying India should not take unilateral actions or stir up trouble.
What happened at Galwan?
- 20 Indian soldiers, including a colonel, were killed in clashes with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh }
- It’s probably the biggest military confrontation in over five decades.
- The US in a statement said it was closely monitoring the situation.
- The Army initially said an officer and two soldiers were killed.
- It then revised the figure to 20 saying 17 others who “were critically injured in the line of duty and exposed to sub-zero temperatures at the standoff location succumbed to their injuries.”
- The Chinese side too suffered “proportionate casualties” .
