DHARAMSHALA: The 5th Leadership Workshop for School Prefects of Tibetan schools is underway at Tibetan Reception Center, Dharamshala. The six – day workshop commenced from 10 April and will conclude on 15 April 2017. It was inaugurated by Mr Ngodup Tsering, Education Minister, Department of Education, CTA.
Ms. Dolkar Wangmo, Chief Counselor gave the welcome & introductory speech. In her introductory speech, she said the objective of this workshop is to enhance & develop the leadership skills of the Tibetan school prefects. Next, Mr. Sanjay Upendram, CEO, Amarthi Consulting, Hyderabad, the main resource person for the workshop briefly informed the students what he would be doing with them in the coming three days. After that, Chief Guest, Mr. Ngodup Tsering, Education Minister, Department of Education, CTA addressed the participants and in his opening speech, he spoke on the significance of leadership workshop for our community and shared the 15th Kashag’s plan of providing such workshop at all levels from School to College and Staff of CTA. Further, he encouraged them to participate wholeheartedly and share what they had learned from this workshop with other students back in their schools.
The first three days of the workshop will focus on identifying and developing leadership skills & leadership styles. The workshop will allow participants opportunities for individual assessment of leadership skills, as well as group work to discuss issues such as building a viable team. This workshop will teach students skills on how to get organized with time allotted. In the course of the workshop, the participants will explore methods of successful goal setting for personal and organizational goals. They will also explore some of the basics involved in leadership communication and will learn ways to enhance interpersonal skills, develop listening strategies, and choose the appropriate communication medium for delivering a message & also on Emotional Intelligence. Students did lot of hands on stuff such as planning a project & presentation on issues faced in schools etc.
On the 4th Day, the participants will get the hand on experience of functions of Judiciary, Legislature and Executive by visiting the Central Tibetan Administration. The morning of 4th day will be a special session with Honourable Sikyong, Dr. Lobsang Sangay & Honourable Deputy Speaker of Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Ven. Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok. Hon. Sikyong will address the participants on functions of Kashag particularly leadership role of Sikyong while Ven. Yeshi Phunstok will speak on functions of Tibetan Parliament in Exile. This will be followed by question and answer session. After that the participants & the teachers will visit the different Departments, The Tibetan Supreme Justice Commission & the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives etc. On the fifth day of the workshop, Mr. Dorjee Gyaltsen, staff & former SPARKE Trainer, College for Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah will take two sessions of Bullying & Corporal Punishment while Ms. Dechen Wangmo & her colleague from Women’s Desk, Department of Finance will take two sessions on Gender Sensitization and later in the evening a session on Tibetan Terminology by Mr. Ugyen Tenzin, head of Terminology section, Department of Education, CTA. On the last day, Mr. Ngawang Yonten, Joint Secretary, Department of Education, CTA will speak on Scholarships and in the next two sessions each schools will do a 3 minutes presentation of activities that their former captain has implemented in the school, challenges & obstacles overcome by them.
The modes of delivery during the workshop will be presentation, group work, simulation, role play, dramatization, discussion & lecture etc.
35 school prefects and 17 teacher escorts from 18 Tibetan Senior Secondary Schools from Central Tibetan School Administration (CTSA), Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV), Snow Lion Foundation (SLF), Nepal, Tibetan Homes Foundation (THF) & Sambhota Tibetan School Society (STSS).
Mr. Tsering Samdup, Director, Education Council, CTA will be the chief guest for the concluding day of the workshop.
Till date, the Department of Education has organized four leadership workshops for school prefects of Tibetan schools since 2012.
