Tibet House Japan organised 49th day prayers at Gokokuji Buddhist
temple in Tokyo for the people who died in the 14 April earthquake in
Yushu region of Tibet. This prayers session is in line with the Central
Tibetan Administration [CTA]’s direction to all the Tibetan communities
in exile to observe the weekly prayers for the deceased and affected
people in the tragedy. Around fifty Tibetans and Japanese assembled at
the temple to offer prayers for the deceased. Tsewang Gyalpo
Arya, Joint Secretary at the Liaison office of His Holiness the Dalai
Lama for Japan and East Asia, appraised the gathering of the
significance of 49th day prayer, which is being conducted throughout
exile community. Mr. Arya also informed the people of the
generous donation that the office has received from Japanese donors for
the relief work in Kyegudo area. He reported that sum of Yen 22,18,650
[US$23,518/-] received in the month of April has already been sent to
“4-14 Yushu Earthquake Charity Committee” in Dharamsala, and that the
donation received in the month of May around Yen 11,77,333/- would be
sent to the Committee soon. He thanked the people for their concern and
for the donation.Tibetans and Japanese sympathisers lit candles
and offered prayers. Tibetans recited prayers, including “In praise of
Tara, Sherab Nyingpo, Jangchub choepa, and Mani’. As transliteration
of the prayer books was also made available, Japanese people could also
recite the prayers. Japanese version of Sherab Nyingpo – Heart sutra
was also recited together. Gokokuji Temple arranged tea for the
