TOKYO: The Tibet Support Groups in Japan yesterday congratulated the Central Tibetan Administration and thanked the United States on the passage of the 2020 Tibetan Policy and Support Act, during a web meeting.
Representatives from 12 major Tibet Support Group and Tibetan Buddhist Learning Centres: namely Save Tibet Network; Fire Under the Snow in Osaka; Super Samgha Japan; Free Tibet Hiroshima; Manjusiri Mahayana Buddhist Association in Hiroshima; Tibetan Friendship Amity Association in Okayama; KIKU for Tibetan Children; Students for a Free Tibet; Potala College; and Free Tibet Fukuoka, took part in the webinar conference.
In his opening, Mr. Makino Seishu, former Member of Parliament and founding member of the All-Party Japanese Parliamentary Support Group for Tibet called on the Tibet support groups to work in close coordination to support the Tibetan people in their freedom movement through the non-violent path preached by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Mr. Makino said Japan should stand against the Chinese government’s intrusion into Japanese islands and press for an end to human rights violations in Tibet. He urged to make a concerted effort to bring democracy to China which will further help in resolving the issue of Tibet.
He welcomed Dr. Arya on taking charge as the Representative and added that it has brought a renewed fervour for the Tibet Support Groups to unite and continue to work for the cause of Tibet.
In his address, Mr. Nagao Takashi, Member of Parliament and General Secretary of All Party Japanese Parliamentary Support Group for Tibet said the parliamentary support group issued a declaration in 2019 to support the Middle-Way Policy of the Central Tibetan Administration to resolve the issue of Tibet and facilitated funding to support the Tibetan refugee community in India.
Addressing the meeting, Representative Arya briefed the members on the key points of the United States’ Tibetan Policy and Support Act 2020. He further apprised them of the action plan adopted at the 8th international conference of Tibet support groups in 2019 and urged the members to work on its implementation.
The members introduced themselves and their activities briefly. They discussed various issues and resolved the following major points:
1 Welcome the New Representative Dr. Arya Tsewang Gyalpo and cooperate with the Office in promoting awareness about the Tibet issue and adopt non-violence as a means to resolve the issue
2 Congratulate Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) on the passage of the 2020 Tibet Policy and Support Act (TPSA) by the U.S. Government (A letter issued)
3 Thank the U.S. Government for the legislation of the 2020 Tibet Policy and Support Act (TPSA) and commend the congressmen who were instrumental in getting this bill passed
4 Implement the eight priority actions as resolved during the 8th International Support Groups meeting in November 2019 in Dharamshala, India
5 Explore ways to hold support groups’ meetings from time to time through webinars and to organise events in the respective areas.
