Dharamshala: The Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile commences Advocacy Meeting on Monday to consolidate efforts toward Tibet’s cause.
The three-day meeting is being overseen by resource persons Prof. Michael van Walt van Praag and Miek Bolties. Michael van Walt van Praag, the author of-Tibet brief 20/20, has drafted many of the official documents of the Central Tibetan Administration and Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, including the Declarations of many of the previous World Parliamentarians’ Conventions on Tibet (WPCTs). Professor is one of the Legal Advisors to the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration on Tibetan issues and is an expert, especially on the Middle Way Approach (MWA).
Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel highlighted the significance of advocacy in strengthening the support for the Tibetan cause, especially considering the pivotal roles history, political status, and international law played in the whole advocacy process. He also emphasised the significance of the usage of proper terminology considering the distinct implication it can bring during the advocacy campaigns.
On the first day of the meeting, the parliamentarians discussed the implications of Tibet advocacy vis-a-vis the international legal status of Tibet and the nature of the Sino-Tibetan conflict. They covered topics including Shifting the paradigm: using the strength of Tibet’s international legal status to advance your advocacy goals, why history matters, and key things to know about Tibet’s history.
The meeting also discussed the strategic utilisation of advocacy skills and discussed in detail the significance of advocacy against the changing political scenario.
Parliamentarians shared their views and raised questions during the meeting and took active participation while putting their advocacy skills into practice.
