On 10 July 2024, Sikyong Penpa Tsering of the Central Tibetan Administration extended his heartfelt congratulations to Honourable Sir Keir Starmer, a new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. In the letter addressed to Prime Minister Sir Starmer, Sikyong attributed the electoral victory to the trust and confidence reposed by the people of the UK in his leadership.
Sikyong further expressed gratitude to the Government and people of the United Kingdom for their long-standing support and concern for the Tibetan cause. The letter stated, “We cherish the long and unique historical relationship between Tibet and the United Kingdom, which goes back to the early 18th century with cultural and trade ties between the two countries. After the invasion of Tibet by China, the UK has always expressed concern over the human rights situation in Tibet.”
The letter highlighted the deep bond between Tibet and the United Kingdom, noting the UK’s steadfast support for human rights in Tibet. Sikyong emphasized the importance of the UK’s leadership in bringing renewed attention and support to the Tibetan cause amidst the challenges facing Tibet today. He wrote, “Your government’s commitment to these fundamental principles will undoubtedly strengthen our collective pursuit of justice and freedom.”
In the letter, Sikyong Penpa Tsering urged the United Kingdom, a nation with a legacy rooted in democratic values, to continue championing the values of democracy, freedom, and human rights. Sikyong wrote, “We wish you every success in your vital role as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Under your guidance, we are confident the UK will continue to prosper and flourish.”
