Shillong: On 18 July 2024, the Tibetan community of Shillong convened at Gaden Choeling Monastery to commemorate the enactment of the Resolve Tibet Act 2024 into US law. This significant event followed President Joe Biden’s signing of the bill on July 2024, supported by substantial bipartisan approval in both houses of Congress.
The program was attended by various dignitaries including the Abbot of Gaden Choeling Monastery, Ven. Tenzin Thinley (Tibetan Settlement Officer), Tenzin Samten (Deputy President of the Local Tibetan Assembly), Sonam Tsering (President of the Regional Tibetan Freedom Movement), along with other community leaders, monks, and lay members of the Shillong Tibetan community.
The event commenced with the singing of the Indian and Tibetan national anthems, followed by the traditional offering of Tibetan sweet rice and butter tea, customary for auspicious occasions in Tibetan tradition.
During the gathering, the settlement officer elaborated on the significance of the Resolve Tibet Act in advancing the Tibetan freedom movement, highlighting its place alongside other pivotal US legislation, including the Tibet Policy Act 2002, the Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act 2018, the Tibet Policy and Support Act 2020, and the Resolve Tibet Act 2024.
Following this, the Abbot of Gaden Choeling Monastery expressed gratitude to the US Government for this historic legislation and the steadfast support extended over time.
The program concluded on a celebratory note with a traditional Tibetan circle dance, symbolizing unity and joy among the Shillong Tibetan community in recognition of the enactment of the Resolve Tibet Act 2024.
