Tokyo: On 4 November 2024, Tibet House Japan hosted a Tibetan circle dance (gorshey) to celebrate Japanese Culture Day. The event saw active participation from Japanese and Tibetan attendees, with some donning traditional Tibetan attire.
Dr Tsewang Gyalpo Arya, the Representative of Tibet House Japan, welcomed the participants and expressed gratitude for their interest in Tibetan culture. He explained that the event’s purpose was to promote cultural exchange on Culture Day and to share the joy and beauty of the Tibetan circle dance with Japanese friends. Dr Arya further highlighted that Tibetan traditional dance movements incorporate spiritual and yogic elements, which contribute to both physical and mental well-being.
Secretary Tashi Yangzom of Tibet House led the participants in the dance, guiding the steps and movements. While the session included several Tibetan dances, the focus was primarily on two specific dances: Gangchen Bodkyi Tenpa and Yudrang Tsanga Shik Shik. The participants joined in a circle and joyfully followed the steps, with Tibetan participants helping to ensure the smooth flow of the class.
In return, Japanese participants introduced Bon Odori, a traditional Japanese group dance that shares similarities with Tibetan gorshey. Bon Odori is typically performed during Japan’s Obon festival in the summer. Tibetan gorshey and Japanese Bon Odori involve participants dancing in a circle, following uniform steps and synchronised hand movements.
The dance session was filled with enjoyment, laughter, and camaraderie as Tibetan and Japanese participants danced together. After the event, Tibetan butter tea was served, and participants shared their reflections and joyful experiences. Many expressed gratitude to Tibet House for organising the cultural event and requested that more such events be held.
