PARIS: The official birthday celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama was held in the National Assembly of France in Paris yesterday. Hosted by MP Ms Elizabeth Toutut in the French Lower House premises saw an eventful celebration with book and video launches as the major items.
The celebration saw a gathering of representatives of diplomatic corps, parliament including Upper House, NGOs, Tibet Support Groups and a big contingent from Tibetan community.
Madame Toutut commenced the ceremony with a brief but concise and strong speech. She recalled the oppressive current situation in Tibet and the violation of human rights. She remembered Tashi Wangchuk. The self-immolation of over 150 Tibetans would not be forgotten. She assured that France and indeed she herself would continue to support the cause of Tibet.
More importantly, she recounted the global image of His Holiness. As a symbol of peace and compassion, she said his contribution to the world has been immense. Though 83 years old it was a thing of great joy that he enjoyed the pink of health. She wished him ever more years good health and long life.
Finance Kalon Karma Yeshi spoke next. He reminded the audience that Tibetans are most fortunate to have His Holiness as their leader. Recalling the tender age at which he took over the helms of Tibetans affairs and that even now at the age of 83 he is amid us to guide us, he urged all to abide by his guidance and pray for his long life. He also thanked France and her people for supporting the Tibetans in their darkest days and that’s why Tibetans are observing 2018 as the year of Thank You.
Representative Tashi Phuntsok and Mr Namgyal Samdup, Coordinator, of the Office of Tibet joined them in launching the book, THANK YOU EUROPE – FOR HOISTING THE TIBETAN FLAG. He explained that the book compiled the hard work of 35 Tibet Support Groups in Europe who worked hard to make the town and villages in Europe hoist the Tibetan flag in solidarity. Extending over 30 years the campaign has garnered nearly 2000 towns and villages hoisting the flag. With 104-pages and 80 colour plates, the book lists all of them to say THANK YOU, EUROPE.
The launch of Merci La France – Thank You France – video tribute by Tibetan community was another exciting event. Coinciding with loud cheers of the French victory in the World Cup Quarter Finals, the beautiful video rendition was applauded by one and all, especially the French Guests. Guests were handed the video as a token of gratitude.
It may also be mentioned that Kalon Karma Yeshi arrived in Paris on July 5. He was received at the airport by the Representative and Coordinator of Office of Tibet and Tibetan community leaders. Earlier in the morning, Kalon Yeshi met with the board members of AET, an association of aiding children, which has dedicated nearly 30 years of service to Tibetan children. Issues of mutual interest and benefit were discussed.
Tibetan community in France will celebrate the public birthday of His Holiness tomorrow. Kalon Karma Yeshi will be the chief guest.
