Brussels: Office of Tibet, Brussels hosted a virtual panel discussion on the theme “European perspective on His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibet” on Friday, 4 September 2020. The panel discussion was hosted following the release of a 17-minute video on His Holiness and the EU titled “I admire the spirit of the European Union” on Tibetan Democracy day, 2 September. The video summarizes His Holiness’ admiration of and interaction with the European Union for over three decades, beginning in 1988. Watch the video here.
A panel of distinguished speakers such as Dr Lobsang Sangay, President of the Central Tibetan Administration, MEP Mikulas Peksa, Chair of the Tibet Interest Group (TIG) in the European Parliament, MP Samuel Cogolati, Vice-Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Belgian Federal Parliament and Mr Tashi Phuntsok, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the EU took part in the discussion.
The panel discussion was moderated by Ms Rigzin Choedon Genkhang, EU Advocacy Officer, office of Tibet, Brussels.
The interactions aimed to get as the title suggests European perspective on His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibet.
In his opening address, President Sangay spoke on the current human rights situation prevailing in Tibet and the European support for His Holiness the Dalai Lama and for Tibet. He also gave a global perspective on the role of Europe in the present international geo-political scenario.
MEP Peksa gave an overview on the work of the TIG in the European Parliament, which has been in existence for over three decades. He also highlighted the 2018 EP resolution on Tibet and other important initiatives carried out by the TIG in recent times.
MP Cogolati highlighted Belgium’s acknowledgement of the importance of Tibetan environment and ecology as well as Belgian government’s position on the succession of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Representative Phuntsok gave general ideas about His Holiness’ consistent support for European principles of rule of law, justice and fairness. He also highlighted the support extended by the European member states to Tibet and Tibetans – especially Belgium where we have a sizable Tibetan community.
