Dharamshala: A meeting was conducted from 18 to 22 May 2023 at the Department of Education (DoE), Central Tibetan Administration, to standardise Tibetan vocabulary for primary school scientific terms.
The terminology standardisation meeting, organised by the DoE’s Education Council, was attended by Gedun Dhonyoe, the head of Education Council’s Textbook Section (DoE); Dorjee Wangdue, Science Education Officer at DoE; Chakthar Bhum, editor of the science textbook (DoE); Uma Thinley, a staff at DoE terminology section; Tenzin Choedon, English teacher at Mewoen Tsuglag Petoen School; Nyima Tsering, Science teacher at TCV School Suja; and Science teachers at Upper TCV school Tenzin Ngodup and Lhundup Namgyal.
During the five-day meeting, a total of 200 scientific words were standardised. The committee also evaluated previously standardised terms of the Terminology Section and proposed the necessary adjustments.
The Education Department will distribute illustrated wordbooks containing the standardised terms to Tibetan schools under the support and funding of DANIDA (Danish International Development Agency).
