Dharamshala: The Department of Religion and Culture, Central Tibetan Administration, commenced its 9th Modern Science Workshop for Monks and Nuns at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA) earlier today, on 11 November 2024.
This two-week programme, from 11 to 22 November, was participated by 17 monks and nuns from various monasteries and nunneries, namely Palyul Choekhor Ling, Geden Choeling Nunnery, Dzongkar Choede, Shechen Orgyen Chodzong Nunnery, Institute of Buddhist Dialectics, Dolma Ling Nunnery, Jonang Ngedon Tagten Shedrub Choekhor Ling, and Jonang Kalachakra Meditation Institute.
Five science teachers from the Science Department of LTWA will serve as consultants for the participants.
In 2011, during the 11th Religious Conference, His Holiness the Dalai Lama provided detailed guidance on preserving, maintaining, and promoting the teachings of Buddhism. Accordingly, in 2013, the Department of Religion and Culture invited representatives of fifty major monasteries and nunneries from all Buddhist schools to a conference to discuss how to further advance Buddhist studies and practices. Following detailed discussions, a resolution was adopted to hold programmes to introduce modern science to religious institutions that didn’t have science classes. Consequently, the department began hosting successive Workshops to introduce Modern Science to the monks in collaboration with the LTWA.
