His Holiness the Dalai Lama addresses the graduates of TMAI including the teachers and staff of the institute.

Dharamshala: His Holiness Dalai Lama met with the graduates, teachers and faculty of Tibetan Medical and Astrology Institute (MentseeKhang) at his residence today.

His Holiness greeted all the staff, teachers and especially the students gathered in the hall and spoke about five major and minor sciences.

Speaking on Sowa Rigpa, His Holiness said “Sowa Rigpa ( traditional Tibetan science of medicine) which comes under the five major science addresses the need of mind and spirit but mainly it is used to treat the physical illness of the body. It has helped and continues to help many people despite their believe in this system of medicine or not. Moreover, it is widely known as Tibetan Medicine, so in a way it also popularises Tibetan.”

His Holiness advised not only to preserve the ancient way of Tibetan medicine but to collaborate with other practice of medicines such as Indian Ayurvedic.

Earlier when there were no adequate facilities available for such practice of medicine, this science of medicine wasn’t well known to the outside world but now that the opportunities and facilities are fairly available, His Holiness advised the members to exchange learning and experiences with one another.

“We should always strive for improvement,” asserted His Holiness.

His Holiness suggested collaborating the Tibetan practice of medicine with science so more people could believe its benefits.

Sowa Rigpa as His Holiness mentioned can be explained and analysed in terms of science in today’s world so it becomes more logical and beneficial just like the study of Buddhism and science that goes hand in hand.

His Holiness then jokingly asked the present astrologers in the gathering if they could predict whether the situation of Tibet is going to change not.

HIs Holiness accentuated that astrology which is classified under the minor science remains a vital part of Tibetan culture because of its ancient practice.

” Traditional Tibetan science of medicine is a significant part of Tibetan culture and it is also benefitting many people in reality so therefore, you must always strive to upgrade the standard of Tibetan medicine.” suggested His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
