Three journalists in Nepal are facing the influence of China as they are facing an investigation from the government for translating an article about His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The journalists published the article about the Tibetan spiritual leader admitted to a hospital in New Delhi in the recent past but was soon discharged from there, fully recovered.
Three journalists at the Rashtriya Samachar Samiti, Nepal’s national news agency, are being probed according to the report by The Kathmandu Post for publishing a news report about His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The probe has been initiated after the Chinese embassy expressed objection to the Nepali government.
“RSS journalists working at the English desk of the news agency–Mohani Risal, Somnath Lamichhanne and Jivan Bhandari–face the probe for translating and disseminating a wire report about the Dalai Lama being discharged from a hospital in New Delhi and his return to Dharamshala on April 27 after treatment.” said the report on Monday.
Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gokul Baskota has said in the report that Tibet issue is very sensitive for China and publishing an article about the Dalai Lama by a state-run news agency goes against Nepal’s commitment to ‘One China Policy’. Although there are accounts of internal politics within the news agency being responsible to reaching out to a probe against three of the journalists, the incident clearly indicates how Chinese influence is making its impact in the Himalayan state.
According to the three journalists, the news about His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a global newsmaker and the report about his health was a piece of important information across the world including, Nepal.
