Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama speaks during the inauguration of ‘The World of Children’ initiative in New Delhi on Sunday.

Delhi: Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Sunday said India and China have “great potential” and they could work together towards a more compassionate world.

“I think, a great potential… India and China can do something for a more compassionate humanity.. Imagine two billion people working together,” His Holiness told reporters after inaugurating Smile Foundation’s initiative, The World of Children in Delhi.

He stressed that the two neighbours should co-exist with mutual trust as neither had the ability to destroy another. “At a practical level, neither one has the ability to destroy others. Whether you like it or not, you have to live side by side.”

His Holiness also mentioned that India and China shared an ancient spiritual connection. Chinese Buddhist Hsuan Tsang had visited Nalanda and brought Nalanda Buddhist traditions to China.

“All thinkers of Nalanda are Indian. So Nalanda’s tradition is India’s tradition. The Nalanda traditions had turned Tibetans, who were warriors, into more compassionate, peaceful and non-violent nation, he said.

He also pointed that the existing modern education was oriented to material values and “India could take lead in improving the education system by combining modern education with ancient knowledge.”

The Peace icon is currently on a week-long three-city tour to Delhi, Bhubaneshwar and Kolkata. Having concluded his Delhi visit, His Holiness is now headed for a 2-day visit to Bhubaneshwar.
