For Immediate Release
On Tuesday, 20 October 2015, The Central Tibetan Administration will launch its campaign “Tibet Climate Action For The Roof Of The World”. The largest UN Climate Change Conference, COP21, will be held in Paris from 30 November to 11 December 2015. More than 40,000 delegates and world leaders from 194 countries will converge in Paris for this global climate change summit to achieve a strong legally binding universal agreement on climate change.
The Tibetan Plateau, home to the world’s third largest store of glaciers, largest source of fresh water and the head source of Asia’s six largest rivers, has been facing a temperature rise of three times more than global average resulting into rapid glacier retreat, permafrost degradation, and grassland desertification. Recent scientific studies have shown that these catastrophic events are affecting the timing and intensity of the Indian monsoon as well as the rise of heat waves in Europe and Northeast Asia.
The Central Tibetan Administration’s (CTA) “Tibet Climate Action For The Roof Of The World” campaign is to urge the international community and world leaders gathering in Paris to recognize the Tibetan Plateau’s importance to the environmental health of the planet and to make Tibet central to global climate change discussions. The launch will include a video message from His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
