DHARAMSHALA: Tashi Kyi, a Tibetan mother of five from Labrang (incorporated into China’s Gansu Province) set herself ablaze in the late night of 27 August. She succumbed to her burn injuries early in the morning the next day.
Tashi Kyi, aged around 55, hails from Ngura village, Sankhog Township in Sangchu County, Kanlho Tibet Autonomous Prefecture. The reason of the self-immolation remains unknown. However, local Tibetan villagers believe the self-immolation protest could have been triggered by the arrival of 150 Chinese authorities recently who destroyed Tibetan owned properties claiming the properties belonged the Chinese government.
Tashi Kyi is the 7th Tibetan to resort to self-immolation this year and the 142 since 2009 (see factsheet). Out of the 142 Tibetans; 25 were women and the remaining 117 were men. 123 out of the total 142 have died while the status of the rest is unknown.
