DHARAMSHALA: In a show of support to the Tibetan people, Ms. Claudia Roth, Vice-President of the Bundestag (German Parliament) urged the Chinese government to resume dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s representatives for genuine autonomy in Tibet.

Ms. Roth, a long-time Tibet supporter, is in Dharamshala to attend the official function to mark the 56th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising day tomorrow.

Addressing a press conference today in Dharamshala, she said: “ I am incredibly happy to be here. I come here as a good friend of Tibet to share your problem, your sorrow, your tears and your smiles. I first met His Holiness the Dalai Lama 25 years ago when I was the President of the Green group in the European Parliament. And since then, we have been good friends.”

“I am proud to be here to speak on this important occasion. It is a day of remembrance of the Tibetan uprising in 1959. We, as Germans, know it is important not to forget and to keep history alive. History is the basis to build a better future,” she said.

” A very good friend of mine told me years ago, ‘don’t forget, forgetting would kill’. So, I think it is our duty as a human being not to forget the Tibet issue. If we forget, the culture and the wealth of the people would disappear and it would not survive,” she said.

She voiced strong support to the Middle Way Approach of the Central Tibetan Administration to resolve the Tibet issue. “ The Middle Way Approach is a very good basis for real dialogue and I urge the Chinese side to accept this reach-out from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people,” she said, adding that the middle way approach is in the proper interest of China because it is compatible with Chinese law.

Ms. Roth also urged other countries of the world to support the Tibetan movement as it is based on democratic ideals. She also added that Tibet being one of the largest reservoirs of water is also crucial to stability and peace around the world.

Expressing her concern towards the current world scenario, she said,” In a world full of crimes, crisis and war, we need more dignity. Every nation should respect human rights to guarantee stability, peace and freedom. Human beings should have the dignity of life irrespective of sex, religion or age, she said.

Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay, in his address said: “I am delighted to receive Honorable Ms. Claudia Roth to Dharamshala. She kindly agreed to our invitation to come and be our chief guest at the 56th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day.”

“ I thank her on behalf of all the Tibetans, including those inside Tibet, to have come here. We are grateful that a person of such stature travelled all the way from Germany to Dharamshala to show her support and solidarity. Your presence here sends a strong message of hope to us that despite the repression and suppression, there are friends, especially friends who matter, who take the trouble to be with the Tibetan people in our hour of need,” Sikyong said.

Ms. Claudia Roth will address the official function tomorrow as the chief guest marking the 56th Tibetan National Uprising Day at the Tsuglagkhang.

She is scheduled to meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama and visit Tibetan institutions during her three-day visit here.

Ms. Claudia Roth’s visit is facilitated by Deutschland Tibet Initiative.
