DHARAMSHALA: Tibetans in Dharamshala held a prayer service on 5 June to express solidarity with the Tibetan self-immolators especially Tenzin Sherab who burned himself on 27 May. The prayer service was organised by the Department of Religion and Culture of the Central Tibetan Administration.

Addressing the public during the service, Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay expressed his hope for the resolution of the Tibet issue through dialogue with the People’s Republic of China on the basis of the mutually beneficial Middle Way Approach.

Kalons and officials of the Central Tibetan Administration along with local Tibetans and monks attended the prayer service. The prayer service was presided over by Thomthog Rinpoche, abbot of Namgyal monastery which is the private monastery of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Despite the Central Tibetan Administration’s repeated appeals urging Tibetans not to resort to drastic actions, 118 Tibetans have set themselves on fire protesting against the Chinese government’s repressive policies in Tibet. Most of the self-immolators have called for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet and freedom for Tibetans.
