DHARAMSHALA: The Kalon for the Department of Home visited Tibetans in Ladakh, including snow-affected nomadic herders in seven areas in Jangthang, from 7 – 14 March 2013.

Kalon Dolma Gyari travelled around 2,000 kms under inclement weather condition to meet Tibetan nomads who have lost hundreds of their livestock due to heavy snowfall this winter. “Kalon Dolma Gyari’s visit to the nomadic people and her condolences touched the heart of Tibetan nomads in Jangthang. Everyone in Jangthang was so happy to see her in the hour of need,” Chief Representative officer Dhondup Tashi said.

The home kalon thanked the central and state government, council body and district administration for helping the Tibetan nomads. She also met Tibetans living in Choglamsar Sonamling settlement and listened to their grievances. Kalon Dolma Gyari flew back to Delhi on 14 March.

The Office of the Chief Representative earlier said heavy snow fall between January – February trapped the Tibetan nomadic community, killing over 5,000 livestock, including goats and sheep, due to severe cold and hunger.  The worst affected areas are Jangthang, Kakshung, Goyul, Chumur, Hanley, Sumdho, Jangthang and Nyoma.
The Kashag and the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama announced Rs 5 lakh and Rs 10 lakh respectively as compensation.
