DHARAMSHALA: The roads in Dharamsala are bedecked with many welcome gates, a kaleidoscope of colourful prayer flags and buntings to welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Lined on both sides of the roads, thousands of Tibetans and well-wishers accorded a grand welcome reception to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his return to Dharamsala today after concluding a very successful visit to the United States.

His Holiness was received at the Kangra airport by Kalon Tripa Prof Samdhong Rinpoche and Lopon Sonam Tenphel, the Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile. Kalon Tsering Phuntsok and Kalon Dongchung Ngodup were also present at the airport. Heads of the Tibetan non-governmental organisations were also there to welcome His Holiness. Other dignitaries of the Central Tibetan Administration, including the justice commissioners, members of the Parliament, Kalons and secretaries, welcomed His Holiness at his residence.

The artistes of the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts and Thangthong Lugar performed Tashi Sholpa on the occasion.

His Holiness was in the United States for a two-week long visit from 6 – 18 July, during which conferred the historic Kalachakra teachings and met top political leaders, including President Barack Obama in Washington DC and attended interfaith dialogue in Chicago.

One of the most important highlights of the visit is the meeting between President Barack Obama and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. President Obama stressed the resumption of dialogue between Holiness the Dalai Lama’s representatives and the Chinese government to resolve the issue of Tibet. The US reaffirmed its support for the preservation of Tibetan people’s unique identity and cultural heritage, and underscored the importance of the protection of human rights of Tibetans.

Another important highlight of His Holiness’ visit was the conferment of Mother Teresa International Caring Award at the US Capitol on 13 July. His Holiness received the prestigious award for dedicating his life to promoting the values of caring, compassion and public service. The award was presented by former senators Robert Dole and Tom Daschle, honorary co-chairs and Mr. Val J. Halamandaris, executive director of the Caring Institute.
