DHARAMSHALA: His Holiness the Dalai Lama
paid glowing tributes to former Karnataka chief minister S Nijalingappa
for his support in giving shelter to thousands of Tibetan refugees in
the state in 1959. Addressing a large gathering after dedicating
the S Nijalingappa memorial on the outskirts of Chitradurga near
Bangalore, recalled the concern shown to the Tibetan refugees by
Nijalingappa as the chief minister in 1959. It was he who ordered that
colonies be created for Tibetans first in Bylakuppe. Today, some 40,000
Tibetans are living in five settlements in the state, he said. His
Holiness said that he first met Nijalingappa in 1956, when he was the
chief minister. Expressing concern over the happenings in Tibet at that
point in time, Nijalingappa had promised all help and support, he
recalled. He described the former chief minister as ‘an honest
politician who was wedded to principles.’ His Holiness wished
that the ideals of true democracy and upliftment of rural people be
taught at the Nijalingappa memorial. He praised India for its
secularism, commitment to uphold religious harmony and rule of law which
were models to rest of the world. Five largest
agricultural-based Tibetan settlements – Dickyi Larsoe and Lugsung
Samdupling in Bylakuppe, Dhondenling in Kollegal, Doeguling in Mundgod
and Rabgayling, Hunsur – are located in Karnataka state. The
Tibetans faced insurmountable difficulties in the early stages of their
rehabilitation. The settlements have now grown into self-sufficient
communities with all the necessary infrastructures such as agricultural
lands, schools, co-operative units, health centres and monasteries among
