Dharamshala: US President George W Bush and first lady Laura Bush on Tuesday hosted a lunch for democracy activists from around the world to discuss how to advance the freedom agenda, the protection of human rights, and the dignity of all people, New York Sun reported.

Democracy activists from around the world, including Russia, Lithuania, Sierra Leone, Belarus, Burma, Cuba, North Korea, Syria, attended the event on Governors Island, an island located in Upper New York Bay. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was also present.

At the invitation of President Bush, Mr Lodi Gyari, Special Envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, attended the luncheon.

The inclusion of Mr. Gyari is part of President Bush’s continued efforts to support a negotiated solution to Tibet, rights group International Campaign for Tibet said.

The President also hosted Mr. Gyari in May 2008 at the White House to mark Asia-Pacific Heritage month in the United States when he stressed the need for continued and substantive dialogue between representatives of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Chinese government to address in a real way the deep and legitimate concerns of the Tibetan people.
