Dharamshala: "A sustainable effort in preserving and promoting the unique Tibetan identity, language, culture and religion is the essence of our struggle," said Education Kalon Thupten Lungrig yesterday at the inaugural day of the second All India Tibetan College Students' Conference (AITSC).

Some 60-odd students from around eighteen colleges across India are attending the three-day conference at the College of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah near Dharamshala.

The conference, organised by the Sarah chapter of the Tibetan Students' Association aims to boost Tibetan youth initiatives in furtherance of the Tibetan cause.

Recounting the visions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in establishing separate schools for Tibetan children during the early years in exile, the Kalon said, "The younger generation have to have his visions and prepare themselves to take greater responsibility in upholding our unique identity, language and religion."

He also emphasised the importance of inculcating moral and ethical behaviour, which is on declining, due to dereliction on the part of both older and younger generation.

In the subsequent days during the conference, the participants will review the resolutions passed in the previous meeting. Talks on tackling unemployment, college students role in the Tibetan struggle, preservation of Tibet's religion and culture, world peace and Middle-Way Approach are also on the conference agenda.

Also during the conference, the Students' Association honoured former president of TCV school, Jetsun Pema for her great service in providing education and sustenance to Tibetan childrens in exile.

The students will tour all offices and departments of the Central Tibetan Administration, along with institutes and NGOs in and around this town.

The first AITSC was convened at Mangalore in South India on 29 December 2006.
