Students learn Tibetan Democracy in Exile and Situation in Tibet

Dharamshala: Some 80 students and 16 teachers, from 16 Tibetan senior secondary schools across India, have gathered in Dharamshala to learn Tibetan Democracy in Exile and situation in Tibet, at a 9-day workshop organised by the Tibetan Parliamentary and Policy Research Centre and National Endowment of Democracy.

Participants from the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Varanasi and College of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarah are also attending the workshop.


TPPRC Director Penpa Tsering gave an overall briefing on the workshop and functions of the Central Tibetan Administration, followed by an introductory session by participants on the first day of the workshop, which kicked off yesterday at the Tibetan Children's Village, Lower Dharamshala.

In the subsequent days, students will hear from resource persons including, Kalon Tripa Samdhong Rinpoche, Parliament Speaker Karma Chophel, MP Pema Jungney, Sonam N Dagpo, secretary for Information of the Department of Information and International Relations (DIIR),Dawa Tsering, head of Chinese section at DIIR and others.

Topics for the workshop ranges from the economic policies and formulation of budgets of the Central Tibetan Administration, chronology of Sino-Tibetan dialogue process, origins of four schools of Tibetan Buddhism, an introduction to Tibetan Buddhism and political situation in Tibet and China.

As a practical approach to the workshop, the participants will also visit various departments of the Central Tibetan Administration and other Dharamshala-based Tibetan institutions to get a first hand knowledge and information.
