TCV celebrates 47th founding anniversary

Dharamshala: The Tibetan Children's Village (TCV) celebrated its 47th founding anniversary yesterday with display of colourful events. Thousands of people from all walks of life converged at the festive occasion.

"This year's anniversary is dedicated to the conferment of the US Congressional Gold Medal to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on 17 October and umpteenth honor bestowed for his endeavor in peace initiatives," said Mr Tsewang Yeshi, the president of TCV.

"The school, with a humble beginning on 17 May 1960 as a nursery school with little more 51 children, has today become a thriving, integrated educational community for destitute Tibetan children in exile, as well as for hundreds of those escaping from Tibet in recent years," he said.

He said, the school pays tribute to His Holiness the Dalai Lama for his constant blessings and the unwavering support by the Government of India, generous donors, both past and present staff members during the difficult phase of history.

He said, the school has given education to a total of 49376 students since its inception and presently some 16, 178 children are under its care.

While addressing on the occasion, chief guest Kalon Tsering Dhondup lauded the school administration for providing education for the Tibetan children in exile for the last 40 years, as one of the greatest achievement.

He lauded the school's initiative in introducing new curricula of using Tibetan language as a medium of instruction at the primary school level and urged the school administration to introduce the basic education policy implemented by schools during the Department of Education.

He urged the students to undertake research studies in various specialised fields and appealed to the parents to take more responsibility to inculcate moral and ethical values.

He expressed sincere gratitude to all the organisation and individual donors for extending support for the education of Tibetan children and urged the Tibetan rich families and ex-student groups to provide financial aid for their education.

Mr Pema Jungney, member of Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, urged the students to excel in traditional and modern education to achieve the purpose of maintaining our national identity.

He lauded the school administration in providing education to children of poor and destitute family in exile community, and particularly to thousands of children from Tibet who don't have the opportunity to study in Tibet.

He strongly expressed concern over the consumption of substances capable of intoxication in Tibetan schools these days and urged the school administration to implement stringent regulations to help eradicate the evil from spreading.


Cultural performances and calisthenics display by students were the morning session’s attractions, followed by an opera performance "Choegyal Norsang" by the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts.

Later in the evening, the representatives of the different TCV schools met in a battle of words in the inter TCV Tibetan debate competition.
