SHILLONG: Tibetans in Shillong celebrated His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 83rd birth anniversary at the Buddhist Monastery Shillong on 6 July.

The joyous occasion was graced by honourable chief secretary of Meghalaya Shri Yeshi Tsering and Customs Commissioner Bhandana Deori along with Member of Tibetan Parliament Mrs Yangchen Dolker, Tibetan settlement officer Mr Pema Dhondup, abbot of the monastery, various heads of the local association and more than 400-strong public including some Bhutanese students attended the function.

On behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration and the Tibetan community of Shillong, the Settlement officer presented a memento to the Chief Secretary of Meghalaya and the Customs Commissioner, symboling gratitude and acknowledgement of the kind support of the Indian government and people.

In the afternoon, food commodities like rice, wheat, refined oil were distributed at old age home, orphans and destitute to mark the Thank you India event.

On the eve of the celebration, Settlement officer accompanied by office secretary paid visits to the various Indian dignitaries and officials to distribute sweets and present mementoes.
