LONDON: Office of Tibet, London hosted a Reception on a warm evening on 6 July to celebrate the most special and joyous occasion of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama’s 83rd Birthday at the Buddhist Society, a UK registered charity founded in 1924, of which His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the Patron. It is the place from where both Tibet Society and Tibet Relief Fund first started in 1959.
The celebration began with a Long Life Prayers recited by a group of eight monks from the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery who are in the UK on ‘Thank You Year’ Tour 2018.
Dr Desmond Biddulph, President of Buddhist Society UK, in his address, spoke about the great honour and privilege that His Holiness’ birthday reception was being held in the premises of the Buddhist Society. Referring briefly to the work done by the society, Dr Biddoulph assured the society’s commitment to do even more work towards promotion and preservation of Tibetan Buddhist culture.
Mr Chonpel Tsering, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the UK, Northern Europe, Baltic States and Poland, in his address to the over 100 invited guests, reassured everyone that His Holiness was in great health. Represented also presented a short audio clip of His Holiness’ four lifelong commitments, which was aired by BBC4 radio on 1 July.
As 2018 is being observed by Tibetans around the world as the Thank You Year, the Office of Tibet, London felicitated Tibetan supporters and organisations at the reception event. Representative presented Certificates of Appreciation to three Tibet support organisations: The Buddhist Society, Tibet Society and the Tibet Relief Fund and three individuals who have been supporting Tibet for several decades.
The formal ceremony ended with a song for the occasion performed by the cultural group of the Tibetan Community in Britain. The guests were served tasty momos during the reception.
