PRETORIA: The Office of Tibet, Africa based in Pretoria, South Africa celebrated the 83rd Birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama by hosting a Luncheon Reception on 7 July which was graced by Honourable Helen N Makhuba, a leader of Inkatha Freedom Party’s Women League along with more than 75 guests including some members of the diplomatic corps, members of Tibet support groups, Buddhist centres, civil societies and friends and well-wishers of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetan people.

The event began with the singing of South African and Tibetan National Anthems; a minute of silence for all those who laid their lives for freedom, justice and democracy; a short prayer of Invocation and Long Life; welcome remarks by Representative Ngodup Dorjee and a short speech by Ms Helen N Makhuba.

Representative Ngodup thanked all the guests for their sense of support and solidarity for Tibet which is undergoing grave basic human right situation reflected by 152 self-immolations since 2009. He also emphasised that His Holiness the Dalai Lama embodies some of the universal values such as compassion, kind-heartedness; religious harmony, freedom, justice, democracy, peace and conflict resolutions through dialogue and as such celebrating His Holiness’s birthday means celebrating these eternal values of humanity.

As a part of Thank you South Africa, Certificates of Appreciation were distributed to some of the key Tibetan supporters and organisations.

The event was graced and entertained by Singer Wendy New and two South African musicians.
