CALIFORNIA: The Office of Tibet in association with the Tibetan Association of Northern California (TANC) hosted a cultural reception to thank Chinese Tibet supporters in San Francisco Bay Area. The reception is part of the thank you year 2018 announced by Kashag of the Central Tibetan Administration.
The reception was attended by over 80 Chinese scholars, writers, youths and democracy activists from both southern and northern California. The reception was attended by Representative Ngodup Tsering, representatives from Tibetan Buddhist dharma centers, former Tibetan Chief Justice Commissioner Phunrab Lobsang Dhargye, former Tibetan political prisoner Dhondup Wangchen, among others.
Speaking in Chinese, Kunga Tashi, the Chinese liaison officer of OOT Washington, introduced the objectives of organising the reception. Tenzin Ragndol, President of TANC, delivered the welcome remarks. Representative Ngodup Tsering spoke about the importance of the Chinese outreach campaign, the advice of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to foster harmonious relations with Chinese peoples, and thanked them for supporting the Tibet issue.
Chen Weiming and Fang Zheng, representing the Chinese community of southern and Northern California respectively, Chen Dazheng from Hong Kong and Fan Heifu spoke in turns about their experiences and opinions. They expressed their respect for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the non-violent Tibetan movement and the Chinese people’s solidarity with the tragic exile of the Tibetan people and His Holiness the Dalai Lama since 1959.
Chinese artist Chen Weiming, who has constructed a bust of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, has brought it to the reception. He spoke about his goal of constructing 12 such busts of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. After the completion of the busts, he said he will send the busts to each of the 12 offices of Tibet to express his gratitude to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
A Chinese dissident who has spent almost 11 years as a tourist guide in Lhasa met Kunga Tashi separately after the talk and expressed his remorse about criticising His Holiness the Dalai Lama out of ignorance when he was in Tibet.
The reception also featured cultural performances by Chaksam troupe, former TIPA artistes, Semshook Punda and students of the culture center.
