MINNESOTA: In his public address to the Tibetan community in Colorado on 28 February 2014, Sikyong emphasised the importance of preserving Tibetan language and culture, and especially to know our own family roots from parents and grandparents. He also informed the efforts carried out by the Central Tibetan Administration to engage with Chinese government, and also various programs and initiative undertaken for the welfare of the Tibetan community in exile, especially the education of the Tibetan children. The Tibetan community expressed great happiness over the Sikyong and the office of Tibet’s effort in managing the meeting of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the US President Barack Obama on 21 February. Before the Tibetan event, the Naropa University also hosted a tea reception with a group of about 100 people, where Sikyong spoke about the evolution of Tibetan democratic system in exile.

In Minnesota, Sikyong joined His Holiness the Dalai Lama to celebrate the Tibetan New Year (Losar) on 2 March with the local Tibetan community. After greeting His Holiness and the Tibetan community, Sikyong mentioned in his address that Tibetan people are more determined than ever to lead the struggle, more informed politically, and support for the Middle Way policy is very high, for which His Holiness nodded with appreciation. Later in the afternoon, Sikyong attended the cultural performance presented by different groups of Tibetan community including Tibetan cultural student of the Minnesota.

The Losar celebration was also attended by the US Representative Betty McCollum and Keith Ellison, and in their address, they supported the aspiration of the Tibetan people inside Tibet, urged the Chinese government to engage the dialogue with His Holiness or its representative. The Mayor of Minneapolis Besty Hodges in her address, proclaimed the day as the Dalai Lama day of peace and compassion. The Tibetan Parliamentarian from North America Tashi Namgyal and Norbu Tsering including the president of the Tibetan Associations from North America also attended the Losar ceremony in Minnesota.

Sikyong also attended the New Year ceremony with the Tibetan community in Boston. 

Sikyong will again visit Washington, DC, from 4-6 March.
