MOSCOW: The documentary film entitled “Tibet on the Roof of the World”, which was produced by Russian expedition group and directed by Michael Linder, was screened in Moscow city yesterday. It was jointly organised by Moscow-based Tibet House and White Cloud Culture Center.
The film shows the current situation in Tibet, as what they saw during their expedition from Lhasa via Shigatse to Mount Kailash and Mt. Everest. At the same, it contains the old footage depicting the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1950 and destruction of monasteries during the Cultural Revolution.
After the film, the questions from audience were answered by Representative Nawang Rabgyal and Tibet House Vice-President Nadya Berkengeym.
In answering to several questions, His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Representative, Dr Nawang Rabgyal, briefed the Russian audience that “Historically Tibet was an independent nation. But we are not seeking independence. We are demanding for the genuine autonomy, where we can preserve our national identity and unique cultural heritage. Now Tibet is burning. The real cause of protests and self-immolation in Tibet are due to China’s government policies in Tibet: the policy of political repression, socio-economic marginalisation, religious suppression, environmental destruction and cultural genocide. Tibet is a part of the world and Tibetan unique culture belongs to world, which has a moral responsibility to save it”.
Interestingly, Russian national TV channel – REN’s Director of News Department, Mr. Alexei Egorov, who was present in the hall, came up to the stage and narrated to the audience about his recent visit to Dharamsala, which greatly impressed him. He had interviewed His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay in December 2012. The interviews were shown in Russian national TV channel REN on 31st January and 2nd February. He and his crew had collected good materials in Dharamsala and now making a documentary film on Tibetan culture and medicine.
